This cucumber onion dill salad is bursting with fresh flavors from the dill, red onion, and tangy sour cream dressing. It’s the perfect way to eat fresh cucumbers.
What Is Cucumber Salad
A cucumber salad is the most simple and basic types of salad you can make. It usually only involves sliced cucumbers with one or two other fresh vegetables and it’s all covered with your favorite dressing.
Since dill pickles are so popular and recognizable, I made this salad with plenty of fresh dill. And to keep it simple I only used cucumbers and red onions with a simple creamy salad dressing.
This recipe is one that you can memorize and then make whenever you have extra cucumbers that you want to eat!
Shopping List
Before you make your keto cucumber onion dill salad, this is what you’ll need from the store. All of the exact ingredient amounts are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- Cucumbers
- Red Onion
- Sour Cream
- Garlic
- Red Wine Vinegar
- Sugar-Free Honey
- Fresh Dill
Ingredient Swaps
There are a few ways that you can change the recipe and it will still taste delicious! Try these easy ingredient substitutes.
- Red Onion – Use a sweet yellow onion instead of red
- Sour Cream – Plain Greek Yogurt is a perfect swap
- Red Wine Vinegar – Apple Cider Vinegar will be just as delicious
- Sugar-Free Honey – Use your favorite kind of liquid sweetener instead.
Sour Cream Dressing
My favorite thing about this salad is the tangy sour cream dressing. The sour cream, honey, and red wine vinegar could separate if stored in the refrigerator for too long.
For this reason, I suggest making a fresh batch right before you eat. I don’t recommend storing it in the fridge.
I also don’t recommend using dried dill. It won’t have the same aroma or flavor as the fresh dill does.
You can smell the dill as you stir it – it’s dreamy!
What To Eat With Salad
Just like with other salad recipes, I suggest serving a bowl of cucumber onion dill salad with a bowl of soup. A soup and salad lunch is perfectly light and filling simultaneously.
If you love cheese, then keto zucchini cheddar soup is incredible and if you’re really hungry, then low-carb chicken pot pie soup will fill you up.
If you need to eat more vegetables, then low-carb goulash is what you need. It’s made with zucchini and peppers.
Making Cucumber Salad Ahead
This is one salad that I don’t recommend making ahead of time. If you want to save a bit of time, pre-chop the cucumbers and onions and store them in separate containers.
After they are sliced, the red onions will become very pungent, so I suggest slicing them and eating them immediately.
