If you haven’t made mashed rutabagas yet, you’re missing out! They have a sweet flavor that tastes better than mashed sweet potatoes!
What Are Rutabagas
It has a really funny name, but this is a seriously healthy root vegetable. A rutabaga is a hybrid between a turnip and wild cabbage.
Since it grows naturally in Sweden, it’s also called a Swedish turnip. Some people call rutabagas turnips, but in the United States, a turnip usually refers to a white turnip.
Rutabagas have a sweet flavor and look like sweet potatoes. They have half the carbs of potatoes and four times the fiber.
They are also really high in vitamin C, magnesium, and calcium.

Ingredient Swaps
There are a few ways that you can change things in this recipe to save yourself time or to make it taste differently the next time. If you make any changes, please let me know.
- Instead of rutabaga, make mashed cauliflower or mashed turnips.
- Used dried garlic or garlic and herb blend instead of freshly minced garlic.
- Fresh sage would also taste delicious on top of the mashed rutabaga.
- If you want it to be creamier, add some heavy whipping cream.
Best Spices For Rutabagas
Rutabagas – like potatoes – taste delicious with almost any flavor combination that you want to use. Here are a few ideas you can try!
- For brighter flavor, add some fresh lemon zest.
- Use your favorite jar of Italian spices.
- Go spicy! Add paprika, cumin, and red pepper flakes.
- Make them sweet. Add cinnamon and Swerve brown sugar substitute to the rutabagas.
Remember to always use fresh herbs whenever you can. They will look better on top of the rutabagas and they have a much stronger aroma, too!
Keto Thanksgiving Side Dishes
This is a very delicious side dish to add to your Thanksgiving table. It makes six servings and each serving has only 4 grams net carbs!
Want some more ideas? Serve your turkey breast with some keto sweet potato casserole. For something savory, keto cottage cheese salad really hits the spot.
And if you want something that will show off really well, some tasty keto zucchini ribbons with bacon are always a hit! Bacon makes everything taste better.
Storing It
Make keto mashed rutabagas ahead of time and save yourself time on Thanksgiving. Store the cooked dish in an airtight container and keep it in the refrigerator for up to three days.
I don’t recommend trying to freeze it. After you thaw it and reheat it, the mashed rutabagas will change texture. It isn’t nearly as delicious.
