Fuel your body with the protein it needs on keto! This cottage cheese queso is amazingly low-carb and big on flavor.
What Is Cottage Cheese Queso
As the name suggests, this is a queso made with cottage cheese. This is a pretty radical and new way to make queso. But I can’t take all the credit for it.
I first saw a version of cottage cheese queso go viral on TikTok. After seeing several different versions, I decided to make my own. This TikTok queso recipe is high-protein, extra creamy, and exploding with flavor!
Most types of queso are made with white American cheese or queso fresco (or both). This recipe is just as creamy and tasty as the kind you’d get at a restaurant!
In fact, the cottage cheese gives the queso an unmistakably tangy flavor. You’re going to love how this tastes!
Shopping List
Before you make a bowl of keto cottage cheese queso, you’ll need this list of ingredients from the store. All of the exact ingredient amounts are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- Cottage Cheese
- Pepper Jack Cheese
- Chili Powder
- Cumin
- Garlic Powder
- Paprika
- Oregano
- Pico De Gallo (garnish)
Ingredient Substitutions
You can make a few different ingredient swaps in the cottage cheese queso. If you change the recipe, let me know. I’d love to hear!
- Cheese: I used Pepper Jack to give it more spice! If you want a milder queso, use sharp cheddar. To give it more heat, use jalapeno cheese.
- Spices: I kept it pretty mild. If you want it to have more heat, add some dried red pepper flakes.
- Garnish: I garnished with pico de Gallo, but you can add some cilantro on top for a bit of green.
Best Cheese For Queso
Most queso recipes use white American cheese, queso fresco, or both. You might see some recipes that use Velveeta, or another type of cheese that melts really well.
Queso is supposed to be creamy and slightly thin. That’s why most recipes use white American cheese. It melts perfectly! I found that by using cottage cheese, you can still get that iconic texture that you love.
Keto Dippers
Save yourself time and just grab a bag of pork rinds. They are the perfect keto-friendly thing to use as a dipper for queso! You can also buy a bag of cauliflower crisps or keto-friendly tortilla chips.
If you want to make something at home for the queso, I suggest making Keto Everything Bagel Bites, Keto Pizza Chicken Bites, or some Large Keto Pizza Crackers.
All of those ideas taste delicious with this creamy cheese dip.
How To Store Queso
Store the homemade dip in an airtight container and keep it in the refrigerator for up to two days.
If the dip gets solid or firm in the fridge, just heat it slowly in the microwave. It will melt back to perfection. Just don’t heat it for a long time in the microwave. You don’t want to burn the cheese mixture.
