Tender strips of sirloin steak with crispy peppers and onions, in a sweet, spicy, umami sauce – keto Hunan beef is the perfect dinner!
What Is Hunan Beef
Hunan beef is a Chinese steak recipe that’s spicy and has an unmistakably bold flavor. It’s often confused with another Chinese steak recipe – Szechuan beef. The difference between the two of them is that Hunan beef is spicier with noticeable sweet notes.
It got its name from the Hunan Province in China where it comes from. Hunan recipes usually include lots of chili peppers, garlic, and shallots. Most of them are pretty spicy!
Keto Hunan Beef
To make this recipe low-carb, I used sugar-free sweet chili sauce. G. Hughes makes a sugar-free sweet chili sauce that is slightly-spicy and sweetened with sucralose.
When you serve steak with peppers, it tastes like a complete meal. You don’t really need to add more food to the side. For a little extra food, make egg roll in a bowl and a bowl of keto hot and sour soup.
This will fill your family up with healthy, gluten-free recipes that are good for them.
Hunan Beef
To keep this kid-friendly, I didn’t make it very spicy. If you can handle more heat, I suggest adding some spicy red peppers, jalapeno peppers, and some red pepper flakes. This will really kick things up a notch!
The sauce is the best part of this beef recipe. I used a combination of rice vinegar, fish sauce, soy sauce, and ginger paste. It has some tangy flavors with bold umami notes that remind you of everything you love about Chinese food.
Chinese Pepper Steak
Is hunan steak the same thing as Chinese pepper steak? No, not exactly. Both recipes include sirloin steak and both red and green bell peppers. The difference between the two of them is the sauce it cooks in.
My keto hunan steak is stir-fried in spicy ginger paste. Chinese pepper steak only has soy sauce, sugar, and a tiny bit of ground ginger.
How To Store Cooked Steak
This is such a tasty steak recipe. Definitely store extras to your weekly meal prep. You’ll want to eat it the next day for lunch. In fact, the flavors from the sauce soak deeper in the steak as it sits in the fridge.
Keep cook steak in an airtight food storage container and refrigerate it for up to three days.
Heat it back up in a skillet with a little bit more sauce to keep it from drying out.
